Week 5: Drew Tate is an Outstanding Quarterback

Last week I presented my Universal ranking of college football quarterbacks:
drew tate #1
drew stanton #2
god #3
jesus christ #4 (tied)
brady quinn #4 (tied)
(stanton beats god because he's a good scrambler
while god is more a of pro-style, pocket passer. quinn
and the late, great JC at #4 because both are prone to
mistakes in the clutch)

This annoyed Switters so much so that when he was drunk as a fiddler's bitch and riding the high after Ohio State had put the beatdown on Iowa and #1 Universal QB Drew Tate, he kept repeating it as his wasted mantra of the evening: "The only thing I know," he'd slur, "is that Drew Tate is a great quarterback."

And here's exactly how great Tate was:

Umm, that's a mighty completion percentage of 37.5%. So, since it's the one thing we seem to be good at around here, I'll eat crow on ranking Drew Tate as the #1 college QB in the Universe. He is officially banished, along with Pluto, to dwarf-planet status. At least that's better than subplanet, but Universally speaking, where Tate used to be the Big Bang, that's quite a demotion.

Congrats to the Buckeyes, particularly everyone but Ted Ginn Jr. We'd been discussing this last week and Switters made an astute observation that 'Ginn isn't explosive.' I couldn't agree more. He's still a threat on punt/kickoff returns, but Tressel uses him more like a possession receiver. He was a quiet 7 catches for 69 yards and no touchdowns, while Anthony Gonzalez rode his hypoxically-charged lungs for some crazy YACs on 5 catches of 77 yards and 2 touchdowns. Gonzalez is offically explosive.

Which calls into question Ginn's supposed Heisman candidacy. As the 4th most important member of the Buckeye offense (Troy Smith, Antonio Pittman and Gonzalez all outrank him), not to mention the defense, I'm declaring Ginn's Heisman hopes officially dead.

Quick Hits

*Outside of tOSU, no other team appears to be able to content with Michigan now that Sparty is collapsing and Iowa has been exposed (and must travel to Ann Arbor). Some are saying pssst, Penn State, but I don't think the Nittany Lions, a young team, have the consistency to contend with a team as disciplined and mistake free in all sectors of the game as Michigan. In their domination of Minnesota, all offensive stars performed to expectations and we also saw the emergence of a reliable number 2 threat in the air as Adrian Arrington got 3 for 59 yards and two touchdowns to supplement Mario Manningham's ridiculous awesomeness. Also got to hand one to Henne, who appears to be living down the 'Hennebriation' from last year, and is playing good, smart football with lookdowns, smart reads and good decisions. He's also getting a lot of time in the pocket thanks to an offensive line that is by and large exceeding expectations.

*I took Boise State at a foolish +5 and was handsomely rewarded for my prescience. Thank you Vegas. Boise State wasn't interested in even allowing this one to be a game, dominating Utah from start to finish in a 36-3 pummeling, and re-asserting themselves as the pre-eminent mid-major. With TCU out of the picture, and one more hurdle cleared, the BCS payday is looking more likely by the day. Especially if the Broncos can keep up the fury they displayed on Saturday.
